4. HIEROMARTYR HERMAN, BISHOP OF VOLSK<br />

Bishop Herman, in <strong>the</strong> world Nicholas Vasilyevich Kosolapov, was born in<br />

1882 in Saratov province. In about 1902 he entered <strong>the</strong> St. Petersburg<br />

Theological Academy. In 1905 he was tonsured and ordained to <strong>the</strong> diaconate.<br />

In 1906 he was ordained to <strong>the</strong> priesthood, graduated from <strong>the</strong> Academy with<br />

<strong>the</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> candidate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ology and was appointed assistant inspector <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Sarapul <strong>the</strong>ological school. In 1907 he became assistant inspector in <strong>the</strong><br />

Kamyshinsky <strong>the</strong>ological school. On March 13, 1908 he became inspector <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Petrovsky <strong>the</strong>ological school. On July 28, 1911 he became inspector <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Oboyan <strong>the</strong>ological school in <strong>the</strong> rank <strong>of</strong> archimandrite. On February 1, 1913<br />

he became inspector <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kursk <strong>the</strong>ological school. On April 30, 1916 he<br />

became rector <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vladimir <strong>the</strong>ological seminary. On February 11<br />

(according to ano<strong>the</strong>r source, January 17), 1918 he was consecrated Bishop <strong>of</strong><br />

Volsk (according to o<strong>the</strong>r sources, Kamyshin), a vicariate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Saratov<br />

diocese. According to one source, he was killed in August, 1918 in Saratov as<br />

a hostage after <strong>the</strong> attempt on <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> Lenin. According to o<strong>the</strong>r sources,<br />

however, he was condemned to 15 years imprisonment by <strong>the</strong> Saratov<br />

revolutionary tribunal on October 6, 1918, was released on amnesty, was<br />

arrested and imprisoned again by May, 1919, and was shot on September 27<br />

(or October 19), 1919.<br />
