was accused, toge<strong>the</strong>r with o<strong>the</strong>r pr<strong>of</strong>essors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Academy, <strong>of</strong> “organizing<br />

on <strong>the</strong> territory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tatar ASSR a branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> All-Union Centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

church-monarchist organization, ‘The True <strong>Orthodox</strong> Church’… He spoke for<br />

<strong>the</strong> necessity <strong>of</strong> bringing up children in <strong>the</strong> spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church-parish schools,<br />

and defended in his judgements <strong>the</strong> beneficial influence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tsars on<br />

Russian life.” On January 5, 1932 he was sentenced to three years in exile in<br />

Kazakhstan. During his exile in Kazakhstan, Ivan Mikhailovich was very ill.<br />

He suffered from emphysema <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lungs, asthma and heart defects. On July<br />

22, 1932 he was allowed to live freely in <strong>the</strong> USSR as a kind <strong>of</strong> partial<br />

amnesty. On April 19, 1941 he died from a heart attack in <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kazan State Museum while handing over to <strong>the</strong> museum some<br />

documents from his archive on <strong>the</strong> shooting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> peasants in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong><br />

Bezdno, Spassky uyezd. Now his house, which he built in 1902 in Kazan and<br />

in which he lived until his death, has been called <strong>of</strong>ficially “Pokrovsky house”<br />

and has been made a historical monument.<br />

Ivan Nikolayevich Sokolov was born in 1901 in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Sekines,<br />

Mamadysh uyezd, Kazan province into <strong>the</strong> family <strong>of</strong> a priest. He went to <strong>the</strong><br />

Kazan agriculturual institute. He lived in Kazan and worked as an assistant<br />

expert on field crop cultivation in <strong>the</strong> Bugulma experimental agricultural<br />

stations. In 1920 he was arrested “for refusing to serve in <strong>the</strong> army and for<br />

propaganda in among <strong>the</strong> recruits in relation to military service”. He was<br />

sentenced to two years in <strong>the</strong> camps. After his release he returned to Kazan.<br />

On February 6, 1931 he was arrested in a group church case, and was accused<br />

that: “being until July, 1930 a student, he made links between <strong>the</strong> Kazan<br />

counter-revolutionary organization <strong>of</strong> churchmen and <strong>the</strong> student body. He<br />

discussed methods <strong>of</strong> struggling against Soviet power. He prepared a massive<br />

protest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student body against <strong>the</strong> closure <strong>of</strong> St. Barbara’s church.” On<br />

January 5, 1932 he was sentenced to three years in <strong>the</strong> camps. Nothing more is<br />

known about him.<br />

Priest Peter Yefimovich Igumnov was born in 1852 in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong><br />

Darovskoye, Kotelnich uyezd, Vyatka province, and served in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong><br />

Yakovlevo, Yelabuga region, Tataria. On November 14, 1931 he was arrested,<br />

and in 1932 he was condemned in accordance with article 58-11 for “anticollective<br />

farm agitation” and “burning down collective farm property”. On<br />

January 21, 1932 he died in hospital during his investigation.<br />

Priest Nicholas Alexandrovich Modestov was born in 1893 in Tver, and<br />

went to a <strong>the</strong>ological seminary. He served in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Naumovka,<br />
