Priest Nicholas Alexandrovich Protasov was serving in <strong>the</strong> prison church<br />

in Kuznetsk, Penza province. In 1919 he was shot toge<strong>the</strong>r with o<strong>the</strong>r priests<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> parishes <strong>of</strong> Kuznetsk.<br />

Priest Alexander Evlampievich Lyubimov was <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r-in-law <strong>of</strong><br />

Archbishop Augustine (Belyaev). He was serving in Penza diocese. During<br />

<strong>the</strong> persecutions against <strong>the</strong> Church at <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1920s he was<br />

arrested and died in exile.<br />

Priest Nicholas Nekrasov was serving in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Bolshie Izbischi,<br />

Lebedyan region, Ryazan (now Lipetsk) province. In 1921 he was killed in his<br />

own house.<br />

Priest Vladimir Vladimirov was serving in Lebedyan, Ryazan (now<br />

Lipetsk) province. In 1922 he was shot, supposedly for his links with <strong>the</strong><br />

Whites. He had been serving for less than a year, had been married for less<br />

than a year, and after his death his daughter was born.<br />

In 1922, 41 clergy <strong>of</strong> various ranks were killed in Tambov province in<br />

connection with <strong>the</strong> requisitioning <strong>of</strong> church valuables.<br />

The yedinverchesky Priest Yerokhin was put on trial toge<strong>the</strong>r with S.A.<br />

Nikitov, <strong>the</strong> warden <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Lakhmytovka,<br />

Kirsanovsky uyezd, Tambov province for “hiding church valuables”. As it<br />

turned out, <strong>the</strong>re was nothing to hide because <strong>the</strong> church was <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> poorest.<br />

So <strong>the</strong>y were acquitted. Nothing more is known about him.<br />

In Penza region <strong>the</strong>re is a station which bears <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Zametchina. Not<br />

far away <strong>the</strong>re used to be a monastery, <strong>of</strong> which only <strong>the</strong> foundations and<br />

some stones remain. After <strong>the</strong> revolution forty monks were buried alive next<br />

to <strong>the</strong> river. After a time forty small springs began to flow at <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

martyrdom. Their water is considered <strong>holy</strong>. At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> June, on <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> commemoration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se forty <strong>martyrs</strong>, many people come to this spot to<br />

venerate <strong>the</strong>ir memory. They say that on this day all forty springs burn with a<br />

wonderful fire...<br />
