reader in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Beberino, Barnavinsky uyezd, Kostroma province. Not<br />

later than 1914 he was ordained to <strong>the</strong> diaconate. On October 2, 1919, in order<br />

to avoid <strong>the</strong> famine, he sailed with his family on barges along <strong>the</strong> rivers<br />

Volga, Kama and Bela to Birsk, where he began to serve in <strong>the</strong> Archangel<br />

Michael church in January, 1920. In that year he was ordained to <strong>the</strong><br />

priesthood and was sent to <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Abyzovo, Birsk uyezd, <strong>the</strong>n (in 1925)<br />

to Inzersky Factory, <strong>the</strong>n (in 1927) to <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Sasykul, Sterlitamak<br />

canton. On June, 1928 he was made rector <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong><br />

Nikolayevka, Sterlitamak canton after <strong>the</strong> arrest <strong>of</strong> Fr. Peter Valamov. At <strong>the</strong><br />

same time he looked after <strong>the</strong> church in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Preobrazhenkovka,<br />

where he was appointed rector on April 15, 1930. On December 9, 1930 he<br />

was arrested in Preobrazhenka in connection with <strong>the</strong> protests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> believers<br />

against <strong>the</strong> closure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church and cast into <strong>the</strong> House <strong>of</strong> Correction in<br />

Sterlitamak. On February 7, 1931 he was sentenced in accordance with articles<br />

58-10 and 58-11 to five years’ exile to <strong>the</strong> north and confiscation <strong>of</strong> his<br />

property. In 1933 he died from illness in exile.<br />

Priest Alexander Yakovlevich Bannikov. He was arrested in 1931, and on<br />

February 21, 1931 was sentenced to ten years in <strong>the</strong> camps. Nothing more is<br />

known about him.<br />

Nun Valentina (Osipovna Shilova) was born in 1903 in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong><br />

Tastuba, Duvansky region, Bashkiria. On February 12, 1931 she was arrested<br />

<strong>the</strong>re, and on April 30 was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment in accordance<br />

with articles 58-10 part 2 and 58-13. Nothing more is known about her.<br />

Nun Salome, in <strong>the</strong> world Alexandra Ivanovna Zelinskaya. She was born<br />

in 1872 in Ufa province and went to a gymnasium. From 1918 she was editor<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>new</strong>spaper “Trans-Volga Chronicle”. On April 13, 1929 she was<br />

arrested and sentenced to three years in <strong>the</strong> camps. After her release from<br />

camp she was exiled to Central Asia. Archbishop Andrew lived in her flat.<br />

Nothing more is known about her.<br />

Hieromonk Damian (Demetrius Antonovich Lisitsyn) was born in 1863<br />

into a peasant family. From 1884 to 1890 he served in <strong>the</strong> army. In 1891 he<br />

entered <strong>the</strong> Verkhoturye monastery, where he became sacristan and treasurer.<br />

On November 27, 1896 he was tonsured into monasticism, on October 22,<br />

1898 was ordained to <strong>the</strong> diaconate, and in September, 1899. He became <strong>the</strong><br />
