camps and sent to a camp. Nothing more is known about him.<br />

Hieromonk Gabriel, in <strong>the</strong> world Gabriel Alexeyevich Burtsev, was born<br />

in 1871 in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Labazy, Buzuluk uyezd, Samara province into a<br />

peasant family, and finished two classes at village school. He joined <strong>the</strong><br />

Myrrh-Bearers Desert, was tonsured and later ordained to <strong>the</strong> priesthood. In<br />

1918 he was arrested, but released after fourteen days. In September, 1921 he<br />

was working in <strong>the</strong> Myrrh-Bearers workers’ artel. In 1922 he was arrested,<br />

and was released within five days. He lived in Tsarevokokshaisk and served<br />

as a reader in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Kuznetsovo. In 1937 he was arrested, and August<br />

19 sentenced to death and shot <strong>the</strong> same day in <strong>the</strong> prison <strong>of</strong> Yoshkar-Ola.<br />

Hieromonk Maurice (Ilyich Petrov) was born in 1874 in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong><br />

Kuznetsovo, Tsarevokokshaisk uyezd into a peasant family, and finished<br />

three classes at village school. From 1914 he was in <strong>the</strong> Myrrh-Bearers’ Desert,<br />

was tonsured, and ordained to <strong>the</strong> diaconate. In 1918 he was disenfranchised.<br />

In 1919 he was arrested and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. In 1921 he<br />

was released, and from September he was working as treasurer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Myrrh-<br />

Bearers’ workers’ artel. In December, 1923 he was arrested for “distributing<br />

religious literature and concealing church valuables”, but was released within<br />

two months. He was ordained to <strong>the</strong> priesthood and served in his native<br />

village. On December 30, 1932 he was arrested for being “a leader <strong>of</strong> a<br />

counter-revolutionary group <strong>of</strong> followers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> True <strong>Orthodox</strong> Church”, and<br />

on July 22, 1933 was sentenced to three years’ exile and sent to <strong>the</strong> north.<br />

After his release he returned to his native village. In <strong>the</strong> summer <strong>of</strong> 1937 he<br />

was arrested, and on August 19 was sentenced to death and shot.<br />

Hieromonk Basil (Bystrov) was from 1915 a novice in <strong>the</strong> Myrrh-Bearers<br />

Desert. He was tonsured and later ordained to <strong>the</strong> priesthood. In September,<br />

1921 he was working in <strong>the</strong> Myrrh-Bearers workers’ artel. In 1937 he was<br />

arrested, and August 20 sentenced to eight years in <strong>the</strong> camps ands sent to a<br />

damp, where, on November 2, 1941, he died.<br />

Hierodeacon Nicholas Alexandrovich Yurichev was born in 1900 in <strong>the</strong><br />

village <strong>of</strong> Yezhovo, Tsarekokshaisk uyezd, and became a novice in <strong>the</strong> Desert<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Myrrh-Bearers. From 1921 he was working <strong>the</strong> Myrrh-Bearers labour<br />

artel. At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> 1923 he was arrested for “hiding church valuables”, and<br />

on February 2, 1924 was sentenced to one year’s incarceration. In December<br />

he was released. He was ordained to <strong>the</strong> diaconate and served in <strong>the</strong><br />

Resurrection ca<strong>the</strong>dral in Tsarekokshaisk. On May 18, 1931 he was arrested<br />

for being “a participant in a counter-revolutionary cell <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> True <strong>Orthodox</strong><br />

Church”, and on August 20 was sentenced to three years in <strong>the</strong> camps and<br />

sent to a camp. Nothing more is known about him.<br />
