When the mean value is used as a measure, the gap has shrunk from 168 litas to 126 litas. In these comparisons, the increase in living costs is taken into account using the consumer price index. In the men's case, there is no clear trend associated with income rise or fall. Small changes in different directions are observable in various income groups. There is one clear exception here: in the top decile, the men's average income level has increased noticeably. It can in fact be said that although the income gaps between the genders have definitely been diminishing in Lithuania, those with the highest earnings form an exception. In their case, the men's lead over the women has increased. PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTOR In Lithuania, the average salaries in the public sector have clearly increased more than those in the private sector. Even if the change in consumer prices is
114 taken into account, Lithuania's public-sector salaries in terms of the median have grown by 13 per cent. The average rise in the private sector is only less than half of this.
