For the men, a slight reduction in intensity is observable, even though 41 % of Latvia's working men still felt the work to be too intensive. In Estonia, too high a work intensity was now experienced less commonly than in the other two countries. For both the men and the women, the proportion feeling that the intensity was too great had decreased a little. There, for both genders, one in three working people thought that the work was too intensive. The changes in Lithuania, therefore, have been the greatest. In the previous survey, it was noticed that Lithuanian men definitely had the most relaxed working life in the Baltic countries. This has changed considerably in the last few years. In this study, at the beginning of 2002, 44 % of the Lithuanian men felt the work intensity to be too great; just over three years before, only just over one-quarter (27 %) thought so. Work has become more intensive for the women, too, in recent years. According to this survey, working life in Lithua-
152 nia has become much more demanding and stressful than before. The change has been the greatest in the life of men working for the state. At the end of 1998, only just over one-fifth (22 %) of the men in state jobs thought that the intensity of the work was too high, and as many as 44 % saw it as too low. In 2002, the figures were as if from another world. Now, 41 % of the men at the old state workplaces experienced the work intensity as too great, and only one in four (25 %) still considered it too low. The possibilities for men in state jobs in Lithuania to avoid the hard challenges of present-day working life have decreased markedly. Nevertheless, though the intensity has definitely increased, men in the public sector still experience the least stressful working life compared with other working people in Lithuania.
