In addition to its prevalence, the women also saw the increase in mental stress as being more marked than the men did. The differences in experiences between the genders were similar in 1998, too (see Antila & Ylöstalo 1999, 108). It can be concluded that the women find working life more burdensome than the men. Increased mental stress had been experienced the most of all by the Lithuanian women. Over half (52 %) of these mentioned some degree of increase in mental stress at work during the past year. 39%

In Latvia, the oldest age group (i.e. the over-50s) have been spared from the growth in work stress more frequently than the younger ones have. One in three of Latvia's ageing workers said that their work was more stressful than before, whereas nearly half (45 %) of the under-30s felt that way. In Estonia and Finland, on the other hand, it is the youngest respondents (those under 30) who have experienced a growth in work stress less frequently than the older ones.
