CHANGES IN MENTAL AND PHYSICAL STRESS AT WORK
The changes in mental stress at work are naturally linked to experiences of
busyness. A feeling that the intensity of work is too high often means that the
work is too burdensome. It is therefore not surprising that, of all the Baltic
countries, mental stress at work has clearly increased the most in Lithuania. In
Estonia and Latvia, the mental stressfulness of jobs is also on the increase, but
not quite as generally as in Lithuania. Although the degree of mental stress is
indeed growing, the change should not be exaggerated. It should be noted that
in all the countries, a little over half of the working people said that no change
had taken place in mental stress at work during the last year. In Lithuania, the
increase in mental stress has been slightly more marked than in the other
countries. On the other hand, in Lithuania there has been more ’room’ than in
other countries for stepping up operations and increasing the pace, since the
’starting level’ there has been lower.
