Confederation of Lithuanian Industrialists, which unites 41 branch and 8
regional associations of industrial undertakings, over 2.7 thousand various
enterprises in all, and Lithuanian Business Employer’s Confederation, which
unites about 500 undertakings and 55 regional and branch associations, which

EDUCATION
It is set in the Constitution of Lithuania that education is compulsory for
persons under the age of 16, and it is free of charge at State and local
government secondary, vocational, and higher schools. Institutions of higher
learning are granted autonomy. The State supervises the activities of
establishments of teaching and education. Compulsory education, as set by the
Law on Education, is 10 years.
General schools comprises three stages: primary school (1-4 classes) attended
by children from 7 to 11 years old, basic school (5-10 classes) attended by
children from 11 to 16 years old, and secondary school (11-12 classes)
attended by children from 16 to18 years old. New type of schoolsgymnasiums,
which provide extended subject-directed general education and
higher requirements for pupils learning already 9 th –12 th year are under rapid
establishment. There are 4 classes of gymnasium. According to the data from
the Department of Statistics, there were 2.4 thousand general schools, 80 of
which were gymnasiums, in the State in school year 2000-2001 attended by
604 thousand pupils.
General curricula are also taught in vocational and college type education
schools, in which young people acquire profession.
Vocational school gives elementary professional qualification and knowledge
of general school level. Four-stage education is applied, so pupils with
different level of education - incomplete basic education, basic education and
general education - can acquire profession. Usually there study pupils with
basic education. There were 84 vocational schools with 47 thousand pupils
