Identifying and thanking all those who have helped me write this book, whether by
commenting on drafts or by shaping my understanding of language planning over
many years of discussion, is no easy task; impossible in fact, for there are so many of
them. I would, however, like to record my particular thanks to Alan Davies and Keith
Mitchell, the series editors, for their patient support throughout the writing of this
book and for the careful, constructive feedback they provided on draft chapters.
I must also record my gratitude to colleagues at Edinburgh and to students on
the language planning courses I have taught both there and at Sheffield, whose
comments and reactions have so enriched my understanding of language planning
