Combining Magnetism and Ferroelectricity in novel Electromagnets<br />

Pierre Curie first postulated the induction of magnetization by means of an electric field and the induction of electric polarization<br />

by means of a magnetic field. The number of materials that can exhibit such behavior is very limited as conventional ferroelectrics<br />

are chemically incompatible with magnetism[1]. However in recent years a number of magneto-electric materials have been<br />

discovered such as RMnO 3 , RMn 2 O 5 (R=Gd,Tb,Dy,Ho) and Ni 3 V 2 O 8 . In these materials, that are often labeled as multiferroic due<br />

to their dual ferroic properties, ferroelectricity arises as a consequence of frustrated magnetism[2,3]. Frustration leads to a peculiar<br />

transverse spiral magnetic ordering that breaks inversion symmetry[4]. The spontaneous polarization that arises from such<br />

ordering is in the order of
