Catalogs are useful if you offer numerous products that you sell in addition to
your consulting. Be sure the descriptions are complete and accurate. Your buyers
will expect to see prices as well.
Considerations:
• Design brochures so that they are timeless or easily updated.
• Use clip art, graphics, or clear black-and-white photos to add appeal.
• Design fliers for their specific use, for example, flat to hang on bulletin boards
or post in prominent places; tri-folded to mail to your clients, as doorknob
hangers for hotel doors at conferences; or on colorful paper if you want potential
clients to pick one up at a trade show.
• Have several people check the details from different perspectives before your
catalog is printed.
Luick tip . . .
Avoid putting dates on any promotional material to ensure its shelf life is
as long as possible.
Newsletters Writing a newsletter can be a lot of fun. You do need to recognize the
responsibility you incur by sending out your first issue of a “monthly” newsletter.
No matter what happens that month, your readers will expect your newsletter to
arrive on time. Newsletters can be one to twelve pages long and usually contain
short articles that will interest your readers. It is also an opportunity for you to
keep your readers informed about your organization: new clients, new services,
new employees, new products. However, it must contain something beyond what’s
happening with you. That’s why it is called a NEWS-letter.
Considerations:
• Check into bulk mail rates and postal regulations for mailing; for example, you
can no longer staple a fold-over newsletter.
• Plan for articles that are short, practical, and helpful to your readers.
• Include quizzes, self-assessments, interviews, and checklists to keep interest high.
• Some organizations publish newsletters that can be income-producing. Subscribers
pay for the information they receive in the newsletter.
