Luick tip . . .
Flexibility is an advantage you have as a small business. It is important
that you have a plan. It is equally important to build in flexibility that
allows you to work around the projects you accept. For example, a
project at the opposite end of the country affords you the opportunity
to market to other companies in that area.
The Three Cs of Marketing: Minimums You Should Consider
You are about to put a marketing plan together, and there are a few things you
should think about before you begin. These will also be important as you implement
your plan. To achieve the maximum marketing success you must be committed,
deliver a consistent message, and highlight it all with your creative touch.
Consider these Three Cs to be a minimum to start.
Commitment You must be committed to your plan. Commitment begins with
ensuring that you have established time and set aside a budget to implement your
plan. Most important, however, is your personal commitment to continue with
the plan. There is little instant gratification in marketing. You will need to be persistent.
Calvin Coolidge said, “Press on. Nothing in the world can take the place of
persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with
talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education alone
will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone
are omnipotent.”
An annual marketing plan ensures commitment. It will keep you organized. There
will be days when you walk into your office after spending a day with a client and see
forty-three e-mails and four telephone messages that need to be answered, six bills
that need to be paid, two invoices that must be created, and a semi-developed plan
for next week all screaming for your attention. At this time your marketing plan will
also scream for your attention. You can do two things. You can add it to the stack of
things that are weighting you down with their need for attention, or you can be
buoyed up by the fact that you took the time to develop your plan six months ago.
Indeed, probably the results of that marketing plan are keeping you busy! Perhaps
it’s time to think about hiring someone to keep your desk cleared of the administrative
items.
