Your designer should speak with you about selecting a provider and the kind
of services you will want to have. Your designer should also discuss sending notices
to Internet directories and search engines to attract visitors to your site. Contact
your attorney if you intend to accept online credit card transactions or conduct
contests. These raise legal issues for which you need an expert’s advice.
The address you choose should be something that is easy to remember and that
makes sense to your potential clients. Using your corporate name is the easiest.
Ours was not available. One of our employees, Garland, came up with something
that is almost as good. Our address is www.ebbweb.com. The advantage of our
name is that it is easy to remember. However, it is not easy to say clearly. A clear
domain name is necessary; a great domain name is a competitive tool. Leslie
Charles’ website is www.whyiseveryonesocranky.com, the name of her book. Very
practical and clever. I highly recommend that you choose a .com address. It is an
assumption in the world of business. Also keep it simple.
Luick tip . . .
Unify your web address and e-mail address. For example,
elaine@ebbweb.com.
Maintain Your Website
You will want to post new information to your website every month or two. This is
a responsibility that can become a burden if you are not clear about it up-front.
You want people to return to your site. Seeing the same thing after the second or
third visit will not encourage them to return.
Visit your site regularly. Respond to e-mail and requests within twenty-four
hours. If you have an order process, complete an order yourself to ensure that the
process remains as smooth as you desire.
Ask your clients to visit your website and provide you with suggestions. What
would they like to see more of, less off, deleted, changed, or added? Would they like
how-to advice? Articles they could download for their own newsletters? More information
about your services? You won’t know until you ask.
Your visitors should learn enough about you and your firm from your website
to gain confidence in your skills and abilities. Your website should not only exude
the kind of image you desire, but also the credibility you have earned.
