Your website is the only marketing tool that must be combined with other tools
to work. It is not intended to broadcast information like your other marketing
tools. It will not replace any other marketing tools. Instead, you will need to publish
your website address in conjunction with your other marketing items so that
potential clients can find you and your information.
Website Tips
There is so much to remember about websites! I think it is much better digested
in little “bytes.” The tips listed here are a few of the practical ideas I discovered as we
put our website together. I think they will be helpful to you as well.
• Before you launch your site, test it with four or five colleagues who will give you
candid feedback about the site.
• Keep your first paragraph short and grab your readers’ attention immediately.
Less than 5 percent of the readers will scroll beyond what they see on the screen.
• Keep your site up-to-date. Changes create interest and encourage repeat visits.
So update yours every month or two.
• Promote your site through all of your other marketing tools. Your website
should be listed on articles you publish, on your stationery, business cards, any
ads or direct mail, and every other form of marketing you conduct.
• Ensure that your website continues to have the same look and project the same
image as your other marketing materials. The message, the graphics, and the
typeface should all be congruent.
• Give something away. The climate of the web is one of sharing. You may consider
giving away an article you’ve written or tips for doing something.
• Make it interactive. Post quizzes, puzzles, self-assessments, or other activitybased
materials that your visitors can have fun with or have scored.
• Be sure to link your site to others that share your philosophy or that provide
information that will interest your visitors. Update your links as you discover
others. Make these links a different color from the rest of the text.
• Finally, remember that the strength of the Internet is not in the technology, or
the convenience, or even the speed. The strength lies in the message that you
deliver. You must find a way to offer value to the visitors.
