Measure (memorable, unique, mailable, useful) from Chapter Six and still be
creative?
If you are interested in developing your own creative marketing ideas, you
should probably read a couple of books about creativity or take a creativity class.
You will learn creativity techniques, but in addition, you will learn what limits you
and prevents you from being creative as well as tips to help your creativity flourish.
In the meantime, try the ten creativity techniques listed here.
Ten Creativity Techniques
I have been teaching creativity techniques for over twenty years. I am still amazed
at how often creativity is important in the various things we do every day. For example,
I recently was in a hotel and realized that I forgot to pack a belt for the dress
I was wearing to see a client. Sometimes this would not be a problem, but in this
case, the dress reached almost to my ankles and I depended on the belt to shorten
it a bit. I yanked the shoestring from my sneaker, tied it around my waist, pulled
the dress up so that it overlapped the shoestring, put my jacket over the top, and
was off to my first meeting. I am sure you have had the same kind of situation
where you needed to be creative on the spot and you came through.
But can you always be creative on-demand? Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a
handful of techniques to jump-start the flow of creative ideas? To whet your creative
juices? Well, there are techniques that can do just that.
The following ten creativity techniques are based on research and ideas from
many sources, including Edward de Bono, Roger von Oech, and Michael Michalko.
These creativity experts have helped to shape my creative thinking over the years
and influenced my ability to compile a list of practical techniques. I have revised,
reworked, and refined these ten techniques so that they can be easily implemented
in almost any situation. They are easy to remember since the first letter of each
technique spells CREATIVITY (see Exhibit 11.1). They are practical and fun to use.
Because of all these reasons, they have become a natural way for me to approach
problems requiring creative solutions.
You will find a challenge at the end of each of the creativity technique descriptions.
I suggest you grab a note pad and work through each activity. If you do, I
guarantee that at the end of reading this section you will have at least two dozen
ideas for marketing your business: marketing themes, how to generate ideas, or
places you could find ideas.
