Summarizing Your Narrative Assessment
Now that you have defined your business, your management situation, your customer
base, and your financial situation, you are in a better position to establish
successful marketing strategies and tactics.
Luick tip . . .
Ask another consultant to read your strategy and your analysis to
determine whether you have missed an opportunity or if you have
forgotten something in your assessment.
SWOT YOUR COMPANY
As a consultant you have perhaps conducted a SWOT analysis on other organizations.
Now it’s time to conduct one on yourself. SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities, and threats. The strengths and weaknesses typically focus
on internal factors such as service quality, financial situation, available technology,
and expertise. Your strengths might be that you provide the highest quality possible
and that your small size allows competitive pricing. Your weakness might be
that you lack capital for expansion.
The opportunities and threats typically focus on external factors such as market
demand, competitors, suppliers, the economy, social changes, or government regulations.
Opportunities available to you might include a change in regulations that
will require internal training by your clients or a growing dissatisfaction with the
services provided by your competition. A threat might be that a new consulting
firm is entering the market. Use your narrative responses from the last section to
complete your SWOT analysis on Exhibit 2.1.
