Personal Preferences Although your personal preferences will not seem as critical to your marketing plan as some of the other data, if you are not happy with your schedule, income level, and partnering opportunities, you may ask yourself why you are in business at all. It will eventually affect your work; your clients will notice; and business will begin to deteriorate. Or as the saying goes, “If Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy!” Your personal preferences are very important to your overall personal and professional success. Complete the Personal Preferences Chart in Exhibit 2.3 to help you identify those aspects of consulting you wish to guide your future plans. In most instances these items will relate to your personal goals. What does your completed chart tell you about the kind of work you prefer? In the next chapter you will assess your competition and your clients. In the chapter after that you will examine the image you presently project. After you have completed each of these (assessed your business, your competition, and your clients and assessed the image you project), you will begin to analyze what you learned and determine whether the strategy you defined in this chapter still makes sense. This will help you generate a list of potential customers with whom you want to do business—ensuring your company’s marketing success. MARKETING: TAKE ACTION 1.
