a niece or nephew or <strong>gr</strong>andchild. You can always “rent” a kid from someone in the<br />

neighborhood. The idea is to find a playmate. You might remember that a NASA<br />

space telescope problem was solved while the scientist was playing with his child’s<br />

Tinkertoys®.<br />

Now you’ve got the kid, what can you do? Try crayons, Pla-Doh® clay, or bubbles.<br />

Build something (fort, truck, house, dog, castle) with anything (blocks, snow,<br />

sheets, straws, Legos®, or dirt). Play with a yo-yo, jacks, Nerf® ball, Frisbee®, or a<br />

jump rope. Learn to juggle or teach the child to whistle. Go fishing or camping.<br />

Pretend you’re a bird or a dinosaur or a dump truck. Take a trip to the library or<br />

a toy store. Go for a walk around the block, checking all the sidewalk cracks, tree<br />

bark, and clouds along the way.<br />

While you have a captive audience, why not involve the child in your idea? Present<br />

it in a simple way and then ask for advice or ideas. Maybe you will get a series<br />

of “Why’s?” That’s good. Follow the child’s thought process and you may hear questions<br />

that you should have asked yourself.<br />

<strong>Your</strong> Challenge Buy a box of crayons. Not just any box of crayons. Buy the big box<br />

with sixty-four crayons or buy some of the new glitter, metallic swirl, scented, fluorescent,<br />

color-change, or any of the others that are on the market today. Heck, why<br />

not buy one of every kind? After all, they are deductible as a marketing expense.<br />

Now sit down and start to doodle for at least twenty minutes. During that time let<br />

your mind wander on any pleasant thought you desire. What’s the goal? Uh uhh!<br />

No goals. Just see what happens. And whatever it is, it will be the correct answer.<br />

Go to your local bookstore and browse through the creative book section.<br />

Then go to the children’s section and page through a few of the picture<br />

books. This should spark a few creative ideas.<br />
