needs, even when they are not spoken. They “listen” to body position and gestures,<br />

facial expression, eye movement, tone of voice, emotions, and other clues<br />

that come through all six senses.<br />

Tolerant Flexible people have an open mind and readily accept differences in others.<br />

They like to be with people and allow others their space. They don’t take things<br />

personally that were never meant to be personal, since they can tell the difference.<br />

Flexible people handle ambiguity well and can function within uncertainty. They<br />

use few judgmental words and allow others to have their thoughts.<br />

Learners Flexible people like to learn about other things and about people. And<br />

they especially like to learn about themselves. They are confident enough to ask<br />

for feedback, listen to suggestions, evaluate themselves, and learn from their mistakes.<br />

They are willing to learn new communication skills and techniques and try<br />

out new behaviors. Generally, they are skilled and competent in a variety of interpersonal<br />

skills so they have many options at their disposal.<br />

Resilient Flexible people bounce back readily. They do not worry, fret, and wring<br />

their hands over things that go wrong. They admit defeat (rather than placing<br />

blame), make new plans, and move on.<br />

Sensitive and Caring Flexible people genuinely care about others. They are sensitive<br />

to their unique needs and attempt to go more than halfway to meet those<br />

needs. They change their behavior to match another’s. They put others at ease.<br />

When communicating, they understand that another point of view is just that. It is<br />

not meant as a reason for conflict, attacks, or accusations.<br />

Energetic Flexibility expends energy. Flexible people are willing to invest time and<br />

energy in meeting the needs of others. They are aware of what other people need<br />

and want and take that into consideration when making decisions. This does not<br />

mean, however, that they are only other-focused. They ensure that they meet both<br />

their own needs and the needs of others. Flexible people invest the energy to build<br />

relationships.<br />

Positive Flexible people maintain a good outlook on life. When something goes<br />

wrong, they ask themselves, “What’s good about it?” In general, their positive atti-<br />
