different. You could use a tube, brightly colored envelopes, stickers that signal the
surprise inside, a brown paper bag, CD jewel cases, a paint can, or a coconut. (Yes,
coconuts can be mailed.)
Trade Show Gotchas You will want to have something that will bring people to
your booth. You could put intriguing messages under the participants’ hotel doors.
Candy is always a draw once they are in the area. You could send a piece of a puzzle
before the show. You could send a series of postcards prior to the show that
begin to build a story. You could offer a drawing. Have a celebrity appear in your
booth to sign autographs.
Web Page Grabbers People will return to your website if you update it frequently
and include something of value for each visit. These items could be a quiz, selfevaluation,
quote of the day, crossword puzzle, tip about anything, time-saving
idea of the month, or new business book review.
Reasons to Call You After Seeing Your Ad If you placed an expensive ad in the industry
journal, you will want some way to know whether the ad garnered any interest.
Give the reader a reason to call or e-mail you. Make it easy for the readers
to reach you and have a way to obtain contact data from them. To do that you
could offer something related to what you do, such as “Ten Tips to Solve . . .” or a
free half-hour consultation. You could offer something indirectly related, such as
an article about “How to Select a Consultant” or an ethics quiz. You could offer
something from which they learn more about themselves or their companies, such
as a self-assessment about their communication skills or how their companies rate
against the top three in the industry.
Holidays Worthy of Celebration Early in this chapter I told you about how one
organization celebrated Mother’s Day with their clients. Here are some other days
to celebrate, and this one is a bonus, because I have identified a full baker’s dozen.
Also, if you conduct business internationally, be sure to determine what holidays
your clients in other countries celebrate and join in their fun as well. Try these here
in the United States for starters: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Groundhog
Day, Washington’s Birthday, St. Patrick’s Day, first day of spring, Secretary’s
Day, May Day, longest day of the year, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and
Pearl Harbor Day.
