way. They are willing to change their minds, change direction, and even change
decisions. They believe there are always many options. They look for alternatives
and will seek other opinions. They adjust plans easily and are not rigid. Flexible
people are willing to negotiate and look for creative solutions. They are willing to
compromise and will work toward resolving difficult situations. They are willing
to take risks and will try out new ideas.
Respectful Flexible people appreciate the differences that others bring to the
party. They accept that other people have preferences and choices that may or
may not be similar to their own. They appreciate diversity and recognize that out
of diversity comes the ability to work together to achieve more than individuals
working alone could achieve. They appreciate others and respect what they have
to contribute.
Trusting Flexible people trust others, until others are proven untrustworthy. This,
of course, doesn’t mean that they are gullible or that they take risks in dangerous
situations. It does mean that they don’t always go with first impressions.
These ten characteristics add up to individuals who are flexible and situational.
These people can quickly sum up a situation and then adapt their behaviors to the
situations and the people involved. Flexible people appreciate what all of the styles
bring to the situation. They are not boxed in by one style and are able to see the
uniqueness of each situation and person.
Recognizing, understanding, and valuing communication styles is important.
Equally important is developing the flexibility to adapt your style to move into
others’ comfort zones when working with them. It’s not easy. It takes much practice
and planning about how to handle specific situations.
