Thesis Keith Gale 2013and meaningful results. Table 9.10 proposes ten variables with data from apopulation of 100. This sample provides sufficient data for analysis.9.14 Factor analysis part 1: assessing the data and extracting the factors forresponses to sociological behaviour questionsSPSS version 20.0 is used to provide five elements of output from the questionnairedata. These are correlation matrix, KOM and Bartletts test, total variance explained,a screeplot and component matrix. Each is presented in turn:Table 9.11: Correlation matrix for section 3 behaviour questionsQ21 Q22 Q23 Q24 Q25 Q29 Q30 Q35 Q36 Q37Q21 1.000 .346 .457 .412 .514 .356 .149 .317 .435 .488Q22 .346 1.000 .264 .399 .284 .352 .197 .253 .288 .237Q23 .457 .264 1.000 .440 .609 .374 .128 .409 .291 .430Q24 .412 .399 .440 1.000 .458 .302 .233 .318 .413 .337Q25 .514 .284 .609 .458 1.000 .429 .200 .427 .375 .505Q29 .356 .352 .374 .302 .429 1.000 .182 .298 .233 .442Q30 .149 .197 .128 .233 .200 .182 1.000 .347 .235 .216Q35 .317 .253 .409 .318 .427 .298 .347 1.000 .540 .550Q36 .435 .288 .291 .413 .375 .233 .235 .540 1.000 .454Q37 .488 .237 .430 .337 .505 .442 .216 .550 .454 1.000Table 9.12: KMO and Bartlett’s test for section 3 behaviour questionsKaiser-Meyer-Olkin Measure of Sampling Adequacy. .861Approx. Chi-Square 311.357Bartlett's Test of Sphericitydf 45Sig. .000Commentary upon results of factor analysis part 1 for responses to behaviourquestions:The Correlation Matrix shows a significant number of coefficients above 0.3 (68 ofn=100) and the KMO measure of sampling adequacy at 0.861 is substantially abovea minimum value of 0.6 recommend by Kaiser (1974). Correlation values from Table9.11 do not exceed 0.609 - well below the 0.9 threshold for elimination of variablesdue to singularity in the data. In addition, Bartlett’s Test of Sphericity is significant(p=0.000) and therefore factor analysis is statistically appropriate for use.221
