ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSThe completion of this thesis has been a significant undertaking, but is in reality aculmination of several events that coincide in space and time at this particular momentin 2013 Anno Domini (Gregorian), 4710 Xin Mao (Chinese), 1434 Hijri (Islamic). Ona personal level, it is a long way from the sixteen year old in September 1973, whostepped nervously onto a construction site at Exeter Devon, as a trainee quantitysurveyor to measure a line of storm water drainage. In many ways, the inquisitiveperson then is the same one writing this – the only real difference is knowledge andexperience – but hopefully the logical thought process that stems from professionaltraining has honed this thesis into something slightly worthy. So the firstacknowledgment is to the construction industry and my initial profession (quantitysurveying). It is a wonderful industry, where focused and skilled people come togetherto produce tangible objects – buildings, bridges, highways and all manner of projectswhich define our species as civilised – many of which will last well beyond our ownindividual lives.The second acknowledgement is to my current Employer – Hampshire County Council– who have sponsored this study, provided full and complete access to data, peopleand resources to enable this research to be undertaken. There are so many positive andhelpful people within the organisation that to name them all would be exhaustive – butColin Taylor (Assistant Director – Economy, Transport and Environment) is oneperson that deserves individual recognition for his help and support – cheers Colin!Following this are of course all the people who helped with returning questionnaires,replying to queries about information and data and so on – thanks to all of you (wellover 150 people).All of the data is of course meaningless without training and guidance to givedirection, purpose and careful thoughtfulness to someone who can be quite singleminded at times! I refer of course to the support given by my supervisors at AngliaRuskin. Not only are these people superb academics – but they are well grounded,enthusiastic and encouraging – all in all great teachers. So a heartfelt thanks to Dr IanFrame and Dr Alan Coday, but especially my first supervisor, Dr Terence Lam, whohas trained me to create my own philosophies and to become a professional researcher,and all of the other staff within the Built Environment at Anglia Ruskin University.i
Finally, but of course not last, is the love and support from my family. Research andwriting a thesis is demanding (well, it was for me), working full time is demanding(again, it is for me) – so rather than having a work/life balance, it has been awork/research/thesis balance for quite a while. This means of course that somethinghas to give and that something is time with my loved ones. So this thank you is for mywonderful and supportive wife Sarah and of course our wonderful young adults. Yourlove, support and encouragement has helped far more than you will ever know.Life is a risk and we have to ride these risks in order to gain rewards.
