Thesis Keith Gale 2013Aggregated coding results in Table 10.2 and structured node tree in Figure 10.5displays a commonalty with clusters allowing group views to be summarised.Primary theme of the research interview centred on participants views regarding thedrivers of performance and particularly those that affect project outcomes. Asecondary theme determines if participants detect any difference between discreteand framework agreements in terms of performance outcomes. Results from thequalitative analysis allow a discussion upon the proposition made by hypothesis H6:H6: Performance outcomes are positively associated with sociological factors(behaviour factors) and operational factor (performance measures).Analysis from factor analysis results in the previous chapter provided a significantcomponent with high factor loadings for incentives, decision making, relationships, trust and knowledge transfer. The factor, labelled duration, required a continuance ofpassage of time with which to gain performance outcomes. A measure of centraltendency found three behaviours (relationships, trust and motivation) that alignedwith strong factor loadings.Confidence with the questionnaire provided a basis to explore participants viewsfurther through a semi-structured interview. A structured node analysis, usingaggregated coded results from the interview transcriptions identified the hierarchy ofresponses. Use of this method allows group views to be compiled from individualinterviews. The most significant theme concerned relationships, where successfulones improve performance and is operated through incentives (either financial orpsychological). The performance node also includes operation of KPI’s as part ofperformance measures. A sub-node to relationships is communication – whereaggregated responses had values in excess of 50 for operational factors withcontracts (measurement process) and frameworks (performance process).Sociological behaviour was recognised as being more effective than financialrewards as suggested by Thibaut and Kelly (1959) in The Social Psychology ofGroups and expanded through a general independence theory by Rusbult, Martz andAgnew (1998). The case study interview results align with this published research asparticipants recognise satisfaction of sociological needs and rewards more readilythrough framework arrangements when contrasted with discrete methods.250
