Le mutisme, le noiret blanc passé, la pellicule qui paraît porter les stigmates vibratilesd’une conservation hasardeuse, la pose des sujets dévisageantobstinément la caméra, le cadrage rigoureux qui rassemble lesgroupes d’hommes et de femmes, d’enfants, dans la solidarité de leurgrâce compacte, tout contribue à l’illusion d’un morceau de tempspréservé. Mais un réveil sonne, c’est aujourd’hui, en France, en 2007.Des détails l’indiquent sans équivoque : publicités, typographies,indices infimes par où se glissent les signes nécessairement futilesd’une reconnaissance du contemporain. Il ne s’agit pas pourtant defabriquer un faux, ni de ménager façon malin un retournementdécevant mais conclusif. Plutôt tenter de capter une inactualité, et latraduire sans la travestir sous les habits inadéquats du présent. Cesgens du voyage et leur campement de fortune, car ce sont bien euxet leurs visages saisis immémoriaux, résistent-ils à la misère ? Ou, lutout autrement, rechignent-ils, libres des canons frelatés, à se fondredans notre chronologie ? But an alarm sounds, for it is today in France in 2007. Certaindetails indicate this unequivocally, including advertisements and typography. Tinyclues for contemporary recognition in the form of necessarily futile signs slipthrough. However, it is not a question of creating a fake, nor of arranging adisappointing but conclusive inversion in a shrewd way. But rather, trying tocapture an un-topical issue and translate it without travesty in the inadequateguise of the present. Will these travellers (because it is certainly their facescaptured for posterity) and their chance encampment survive the misery? Or,read differently, will they, when freed of modified canons, balk at fading away inour chronology?
