Circulant de jour comme de nuit dans les méandreslabyrinthiques de l’antique cité des morts, la caméra se laisse guiderpar les vivants, rencontrés dans ces carrefours exigus. Des grappesde jeunes hommes, des couples, mariés à peine ou de plus longuecomplicité, ou des solitaires, importe peu ici le nombre, car chacundéveloppe un morceau d’histoire, une forme de sagesse pieuse ourieuse. Celle-ci se fait quelquefois chant ou littérature, orale ouamoureusement dessinée, poème de résistance, toujours, à la misèreenvironnante. C’est avec la réserve, à la fois pudique et curieuse, dequelqu’un convié à domicile qu’Emmanuelle Demoris, qui a mené ceprojet sur plusieurs années, s’engage dans cet univers dont il n’estjamais imaginé de faire le tour. For the last thirtyyears its inhabitants have constructed it among the remains of the Greco-Romannecropolis, hidden from view between a housing project and an industrial port.Material life there is, of course, precarious and harsh. However, thisneighbourhood seems to be an area full of vitality and insolent liberty. Apart fromthe ghosts, and in spite of the site, its inhabitants display an impressive lust forlife, an aptitude for happiness that defies and transforms their existence.Circulating day and night in the labyrinthine meanders of the ancient city of thedead, the camera lets itself be guided by the living beings encountered in thosenarrow crossroads. Bunches of young men and couples, just married and oldhands, or solitary people. The number is not important here, because each onedevelops a bit of a story that is a form of pious or cheerful wisdom. It sometimestakes the fom of a song or literature, it may be oral or lovingly drawn, a poem toresist the surrounding misery. It is with the prudish and curious reserve ofsomeone invited to the house that Emmanuelle Demoris, who directed this projectfor several years, becomes involved in this universe that one would never imaginevisiting.
