EDMICHEL FRANCK TREGAN GABRIELDIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATION, CVSEDITORIALSAt the heart of patiently constituted audiovisual collections, image librarians feed ourcollective memory with a visceral and passionate independence, at the service of thepublic, indeed of publics. Thanks to the devotion of these “transmitters” of works thathave become fragments of heritage, the history of the documentary naturally finds itsplace in all its glory. If the documentary is a reading of reality, the media library is destined to become thebest place for learning to read it. The public are invited to get to grips with cultural matterand therefore the cinema tool in all its diversity, far from all manipulation or formatting. This irreplaceable temple of sharing and transmission, of curiosity without bounds andengaged debate, presents itself, more than ever, as a precious ally of the documentarywork. It is thus, at the heart of this free-spirited culture that the public may, better thanelsewhere, become more informed, in contact with words, sounds (and therefore images),rendered accessible by the good-hearted complicity of librarians. These revealing images show us, backwards, from the opposite end, the view from outsidethat we do not see, that we no longer see. These images protect and liberate thanks totheir unique power to reflect, the better to make us reflect. They thus become the carbonpaper of our own history, of our obstinate memory, sorting out, under our witnessinggaze, what will really endure from what was merely the froth. Let us look at them thenand illuminate all these stories of surprising travellers who have crossed cities andmountains, listening to the sounds of the world, to be here in Marseille once again thisyear where they are so eagerly awaited and anticipated.Since 2006, following a proposition from CVS, partner of the media libraries for almost20 years, the International Documentary Film Festival of Marseille is hosting the MediaLibraries’ Prize, endowed with 3000 euros to support its transmission. This prize is tobe awarded by a jury of five librarians to a work chosen from a selection of French andinternational entries, through the prism of cultural cross-over put to the service of allforms of transmission. It will underline, above all, a liberty of style and tone, an authorialvision able to magnify the (un)certain human and social aesthetic reality, thus offering, inits place, a new window on the world.024
