Partant de ce manque, de cette archiveabsente, le film développe une réflexion sur la mémoire, le souvenir,l’Histoire, leur construction. Réflexion en image et sur l’image, sur sesmodes d’appropriation. Hito Steyerl nous fait naviguer entre films defiction, archives cinématographiques, récits singuliers, et interrogeles images qui leurs sont liées, que l’on s’en fait, nous amenant peuà peu à l’Histoire la plus récente. Usant et interrogeant différentsniveaux de représentation, la parole, le dessin, le film, Journal n° 1travaille les hiatus et les écarts, les entre-deux indiscenables, les vides,les circulations et les possibles traductions de l’un à l’autre commeles disjonctions, entre l’image et le souvenir, entre la parole le dessin,l’image et son. Starting out from thatloss and the missing archive, the film develops reflections on how collective andpersonal memories and history take shape. This is a reflection on the imagethrough images, on how they take hold. Hito Steyerl takes us on a journey throughfiction films, film archives and unusual accounts as he questions the images boundup with them all. He explores the way they have been manipulated and graduallysteers us towards the history of the last few years. Journal No. 1 uses andexperiments with different levels of representation – words, drawings, film. Itexamines hiatuses and gaps and the barely discernible hair’s breadth betweenthem, empty spaces, movement and the possible shifts from one to the other likedisjunctive translations between image and memory, word and design, imagesand sound. The process towards this goal is reflected in the actual format of thefilm with its images split in two using a double screen.
