Parti pour repérer les sites de son Evangile selonSaint Matthieu, Pasolini tourne en 1965 un documentaire en noir et blancde 55 minutes. Le cinéaste y parcourt la terre sainte, la commente etsouligne sa beauté. Il parle, beaucoup. Il décrit et analyse, d’un même pas,selon le mouvement que son œuvre n’aura de cesse de tenir : s’inclinerdevant l’évidence, et la redoubler ou la soustraire à elle-même en tâchantde la comprendre. Presque un demi-siècle plus tard une jeune femme,cinéaste elle aussi, d’origine palestinienne, tente de s’y retrouver. Bien deschoses ont changé. Les paysages, et leurs explicitations. Elle est peut-êtremême en désaccord avec les propos tenus à l’époque. Alors ? Elle refaitle parcours du maître, scrupuleuse, pas à pas, plan à plan – mais prend laliberté (la seule autorisée ?) de corriger, de reprendre, à l’image et au son.C’est le même film – le même élan, la même passion, le même respect – lamême terre.
