D’autant que ce jour-là, le patronde l’exploitation est présent dans la fazenda.Outre le suivi patient de l’enquête, sans aucun sensationnalisme, lefilm parvient à produire une galerie de portraits : les ouvriers, leursgamins, le propriétaire, ses gardes-chiourmes mutiques, les employésde la justice d’Etat, sans jamais forcer le trait. Mais il réussit surtoutà rendre la temporalité propre à l’esclavage : temps sans lendemain,ni présent, hormis celui, hébété, de la tâche à accomplir et desbesoins impossibles à satisfaire. Far fromhome, with no way out in far-flung, desolate places, they find themselves tied bydebts to the company that employs them for a derisory salary and sells themtheir tools and subsistence needs at a high price. In Brazil, in the Amazonian stateof Para, a Mobile Team from the Federal Ministry of Labour under policeprotection investigates a “fazenda” suspected of exploiting such slave labourersto destroy the forest in order to graze cattle. The urgency of the investigationnecessitates the gathering of testimonies before these men, women and childrenare forced into hiding. Especially given that, on this particular day, the owner ofthe company is present in the fazenda. Apart from the patient following of theinvestigation, without sensationalism, the film succeeds in producing a gallery ofportraits of the workers, their children, the owner, his silent slave-drivers and theemployees of state justice, without forcing the issue. But above all the filmsucceeds in presenting the real temporality of slavery: a time without tomorrowor present apart from the torpid one of the task to be accomplished and needsthat are impossible to satisfy.
