(JPR)’For a long time I have wanted to try and see if I could create a drama with thesimplicity of action which the Ancients so favoured. There are those who believethat this very simplicity is a sign of a lack of inventiveness. They do not considerthat, on the contrary, “all invention is to create something out of nothing.’ – fromthe preface of Bérénice by Racine, 1670.This well-known quotation was presented by Jean-Claude Rousseau as the synopsisfor his latest film. It represents, as we know, the bedrock of that radical modernitywhich can be traced from Mallarmé to Beckett. It is not so much a question ofmaking a form appear out of something tenuous, but more the desire to attributeto the tenuous its own rightful place and its intact strength, without lending it adifferent intensity of a vigour that does not ring true. This objective is not a newphenomenon in Rousseau’s work. The continued demand for high standards israther what sets his work apart. What makes this film distinctive is the wayRousseau explicitly returns to the source of his creative inspiration. So here heis at home reciting Bérénice to himself, whilst going about his household chores. It verges on the comical : there are repeated shots of him trying obstinately toturn off a dripping tap, or the jubilant close up of bare feet carried away to performa dance step or two. Combining art with life in such a way that nothing iscompartmentalised, nothing lost – that is the goal. This ambitious goal pursuedin a domestic setting in De son appartement, is what would have been referredto in times gone by as the Life of a Saint. (NF)A family secret is fed by the absence of a father. Years go by and the desireincreasingly grows to know more, to find his father, to give him an existencebeyond a vague and unsatisfying image. An image that itself is necessary toconstruct his own image. The director investigates, meeting witnesses andquestioning his mother. The stories overlap and, of course, do not coincide. Notwithout humour, the film, in the form of a quest, carries us along on this journeyof the discovery of origins, from which a more solid and reassuring identity shouldarise. It is not so simple, however. Life trajectories appear, resentments, feelings, but also the impulses, the enigmas and the infinite subtleties of the relationshipbetween a mother and her son, between a man who becomes a father again andhis son. And the film-maker, who is both actor and director of this tangle, shareshis mixed feelings. He comments on his choices, his hesitations and his optionswhen faced with the ambivalent desire of this improbable family that the film, which is both a pretext and the tool of this search, might take on board. Beyondthis singular trajectory, behind the self-portrait, what is implicitly drawn, discreetlyyet persistently, is above all the portrait of a woman, and a couple, in a Koreansociety opening itself up to the West.
