Il y a recueilli des textes publics, de ceux destinés au passant,voire au pèlerin, pour les lire au plein jour : panonceaux historiquessaturés d’informations lapidaires, pierres tombales dépositairesd’épitaphes, monuments divers. Il y a aussi filmé des paysages,témoins muets de drames passés. Tous ces signes sont rassembléspour tracer, plan après plan, une certaine histoire de la lutteémancipatrice du pays. Aucun commentaire ne vient redoubler l’image,personne ne vient ajouter sa science à l’expérience manifeste du visibleet du lisible, le spectateur se retrouve seul avec les signaturesd’époques qui se sont soulevées pour lui. Méditation sur la géographie,sur la capacité d’enregistrement et de mémoire que détient le cinéma,quelque chose insiste ici. Quoi ? Ce vent qui murmure, dont nous parlele titre, et qui n’a pas cessé de souffler. C’est même à ajouter à sonélan, pour qu’il nous arrive aujourd’hui fort de son intacte puissance,que ce calme projet tout entier se dédie. (JPR)For three years, John Gianvito travelled across the United States with his camera.He filmed public texts, aimed at passers-by or even pilgrims, in broad daylight.They included historical panels saturated with pithy information, epitaphs ontombstones and various monuments. He also filmed landscapes, the silentwitnesses of past dramas. All these signs were recorded to trace, shot by shot,a certain history of the struggle for freedom of the country. No commentaryaccompanies the image, no-one adds their expertise to the obvious experienceof the visible and the readable, the viewer is alone with the signatures of theperiods that struggled for him. It is a meditation on geography and the capacityof the cinema for recording and memory. There is something insistent here, butwhat? It is the whispering wind mentioned in the title and which does not stopwhistling.
