ROYAUME-UNIBELGIQUE2003/2007Noir et blanc20’/52’OTOLITH I - OTOLITH IIréalisé par / directeb by OTOLITH GROUPFILMER, DIT-ELLEOtolith I tente de questionner notre orientation, de réorienter notreperception du monde en entrelaçant histoires privées et publiques dans uneméditation sur d’irréductibles projets utopiques. “Earth is out of bounds forus now; it remains a planet accessible only through media”, voilà ce que lespectateur entend au début du film ; une proposition d’un avenir postnucléairedans lequel l’humanité est condamnée à l’espace. Otolith I tries to question our orientation, to re-orientate our perception ofthe world by interweaving private and public histories in a meditation onirreducible utopian projects. “Earth is out of bounds for us now ; remains aplanet accessible only through media”, this is what the viewer hears at thebeginning of the film; a proposition of a post-nuclear future in which humanityis condemned to outer space. The numerous and a space voyages havetaken their toll and humans can no longer move around on earth. Instead, the new mutants study images; a film-essay about this development.Otolith II consigns certain moments of life to shanty-towns, those neighbourhoodthat give an image of the city of the future. These moments formthe inventory of episodes of what Mike Davis calls The Planet of the Slums,an inventory based on an absurd aesthetic them, appropriate to the informaldwellings of those miserable districts. Thus the film shows the real conditionsof the global economy by focusing on details of activities and leisure, theeconomy and poverty of women who live in it.Science fiction in which a 22nd century narrator traces the growth of urbanperipheries in the previous two centuries. The shantytowns, territoriescollapsing under poverty, are presented as models of future urbanisation. The Otolith Group was founded in 2002 by Anjalika Sagar and Eshun Kodwo.EP185
