EDMICHEL JEAN-CLAUDE TREGAN GAUDINMAYOR OF MARSEILLE, PRESIDENT OF THE MARSEILLE PROVENCE URBAN DISTRICT, VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE SENATEEDITORIALSThe city of Marseille is happy to welcome the 18th International Docum<strong>en</strong>tary Film <strong>Festival</strong>(FID) from 4-9 July <strong>2007</strong>.The FID Marseille has become a refer<strong>en</strong>ce for a large number of film directors,professionals and critics and is one of two <strong>international</strong> festival competitions <strong>de</strong>voted todocum<strong>en</strong>tary cinema in France. It is an unmissable ev<strong>en</strong>t that allows us to discoverinnovative pro<strong>du</strong>ctions and to reflect on the <strong>de</strong>velopm<strong>en</strong>t of contemporary cinema.Once again this year, around thirty films will be pres<strong>en</strong>ted officially while five parallel scre<strong>en</strong>sprojecting retrospectives and themes will be the subject of roundtable discussions withfilm directors.Several places in the Phocean city are promoting this docum<strong>en</strong>tary branch of thecinematic arts including the Marseille National Theatre (La Criée), the Municipal Library(Alcazar), the cinema (Les Variétés) and the Regional Teaching Docum<strong>en</strong>tation C<strong>en</strong>tre.Marseille has an experi<strong>en</strong>ced and professional approach to welcoming film pro<strong>du</strong>ctions.The Cinema Bureau was created in 1996 to help find locations, instigate relationshipswith local resources, provi<strong>de</strong> logistical support and <strong>de</strong>liver authorisation for filming. TheBelle <strong>de</strong> Mai multimedia c<strong>en</strong>tre and the National Audiovisual Institute (INA) are alsoguarantees of <strong>de</strong>velopm<strong>en</strong>t in this sector. The Chateau <strong>de</strong> la Buzine is curr<strong>en</strong>tly beingrestored and will become the Mediterranean Cinematography C<strong>en</strong>tre in 2008.Marseille is at the heart of the Mediterranean basin and constitutes an <strong>en</strong>dless sourceof inspiration which <strong>en</strong>courages creation. Its light, its countrysi<strong>de</strong> and its heritage sitesare incontestable pluses but an ev<strong>en</strong> greater attraction for movie makers is itscosmopolitan and colourful population. Marseille is the second city for filming in Francewith more than 700 pro<strong>du</strong>ctions in the last 10 years. In 2006, out of the 26 films ma<strong>de</strong>here, 17 (14%) were docum<strong>en</strong>taries.For six days in July the International Docum<strong>en</strong>tary <strong>Festival</strong> will reveal all the richness,multiplicity and diversity of world cinema.008
