(NF)The film starts with Georges Perec’s eponymous text, which in a few sequencesprovides us with a meticulously precise description of the Place Saint-Sulpice inParis, concentrated into three days in October 1974. A question that is as simpleas it is delicate, fraught with traps: how might this text and cinema interact? Riffresponds to this searching text – with a host of possible narratives inherent in itand steeped in detail – with a documentary adaptation focused on deliberateundisguised banality, from which nothing of note emerges. Playing with (expected)encounters and (inevitable and no less expected) deviations, Jean-Christian Rifftakes on the task of exploring the gap between text and images, from coalescenceto disjunction, orchestrating this detachment as he does so. This gap betweenmodes of representation is accentuated by the passage of time – more than thirtyyears separate the two projects. So this film is subject to certain constraints, from the time it takes to readthe text, to those which Perec took upon himself. These are, however, amplifiedstill further when the text itself is at stake – when a twofold task is confronted:that of transposing the text to the screen and the exhaustive representation ofplace through both words and images. We need to ask ourselves how a text, this particular text, can sustain the image, which, in return, in a constant andparadoxical to-ing and fro-ing, sustains the text.
