C’est cette pati<strong>en</strong>te remontée,<strong>de</strong> soi hors <strong>de</strong> soi, qu’<strong>en</strong>trepr<strong>en</strong>d Gaëlle Vu Binh Giang dans Ho. Si cemot signifie filiation <strong>en</strong> vietnami<strong>en</strong>, il laisse aussi <strong>en</strong>t<strong>en</strong>dre <strong>en</strong> françaisl’élévation, mais selon <strong>de</strong>s abscisses et <strong>de</strong>s ordonnées inconnues,comme le graphique <strong>du</strong> titre <strong>de</strong>ssiné <strong>en</strong> générique <strong>en</strong> témoigne.“Traversée <strong>en</strong>registrée sur 6900 pieds <strong>de</strong> pellicule Fuji 16 mm, etvingt-six heures <strong>de</strong> son, dans ses bagages une Bell-Howell – la petitecaméra <strong>de</strong>s correspondants <strong>de</strong> guerre”, comme le précise Tran KimThanh, le pro<strong>du</strong>cteur vietnami<strong>en</strong>. La suite, sans scénario, écrit la succession <strong>de</strong>s r<strong>en</strong>contres.Avec un paysage et ses sons, sans leur imposer l’asservissem<strong>en</strong>td’une synchronie. Avec <strong>de</strong>s personnages, vivants ou flottants dans leslimbes <strong>de</strong> la mémoire. Avec, <strong>en</strong>fin, la puissance libre <strong>du</strong> lég<strong>en</strong>dairequ’exprim<strong>en</strong>t les poèmes qui ponctu<strong>en</strong>t cette o<strong>de</strong> au lointain qu’est l<strong>en</strong>atal. While this word means par<strong>en</strong>tage in Vietnamese,its actual sound has associations in Fr<strong>en</strong>ch with height: yet it is hard to know viawhich unknown abscisses and ordinates this link emerges, as is also reflected inthe graphics of the credit titles.“The journey was recor<strong>de</strong>d on 6,900 feet of Fuji 16mm film and 26 hours ofsound recordings and there was a Bell-Howell in her luggage – the little camerathat war correspond<strong>en</strong>ts use” recalls Tran Kim Thanh, the Vietnamese pro<strong>du</strong>cer.It is not a question of conquest or of reportage – ev<strong>en</strong> the intimate variety, but ofthe film’s creator laying herself op<strong>en</strong> to the mystery of her past.It all begins with the scrap of an address, consisting of three numbers, left behindby her father that has to be <strong>de</strong>co<strong>de</strong>d in what is clearly a shattered Hanoi. Therest of the film, which is unscripted, <strong>de</strong>scribes a series of <strong>en</strong>counters against thebackdrop of a landscape and its sounds without subjecting them to the restrictionsof a time sequ<strong>en</strong>ce. Characters, real and imaginary, float in the limbo of memoryand ev<strong>en</strong>tually acquire the liberating power of what is leg<strong>en</strong>dary, as is expressedin the poems which punctuate this faraway o<strong>de</strong> to a birthplace.
