Lesannées passent, et s’impose peu à peu le désir d’en savoir plus, deretrouver ce père, de lui donner une existence au delà d’une vagueimage insatisfaisante. Image nécessaire elle-même pour construiresa propre image. Le cinéaste enquête, rencontre des témoins,interroge sa mère. Les récits se croisent et, bien sûr, coïncident mal.Non sans humour, le film, en forme de quête, nous emmène au fil decette remontée aux origines, d’où devrait surgir une identité plussolide, plus rassurante. Pas si simple. Des trajectoires de vie apparaissent,les rancœurs, les ressentiments, mais aussi les ressorts, lesénigmes et les infinies subtilités des rapports entre une mère et sonfils, entre un homme redevenu père et son fils. Et le cinéaste, à la foisacteur et metteur en scène de cet écheveau, fait partager ses sentimentsmêlés. Il commente ses choix, ses hésitations, ses bifurcationsface au désir ambivalent de cette improbable famille que pourraitaccueillir le film, à la fois prétexte et outil de cette recherche. Au-delàde cette trajectoire singulière, sous l’autoportrait, ce qui se dessineen filigrane, discret mais insistance, c’est encore davantage le portraitd’une femme, et d’un couple, dans la société coréenne s’ouvrant àl’Occident. Life trajectories appear, resentments, feelings,but also the impulses, the enigmas and the infinite subtleties of the relationshipbetween a mother and her son, between a man who becomes a father again andhis son. And the film-maker, who is both actor and director of this tangle, shareshis mixed feelings. He comments on his choices, his hesitations and his optionswhen faced with the ambivalent desire of this improbable family that the film,which is both a pretext and the tool of this search, might take on board. Beyondthis singular trajectory, behind the self-portrait, what is implicitly drawn, discreetlyyet persistently, is above all the portrait of a woman, and a couple, in a Koreansociety opening itself up to the West.
