BIOPIRATAS
Ecuador, Bolivia, Brasile, Venezuela, Colombia, Perù, Suriname
animali, semi e piante da inviare all’estero, oppure comprano
risorse. In seguito fanno brevettare i prodotti all’estero
i veri proprietari, gli indigeni, possano partecipare all’utile
derivante. E’ possibile privatizzare la conoscenza e la
natura?
pone seri interrogativi filosofici.
Bios, from the Greek, life. Pirates, or those who travel the seas
with the intent to steal. For 500 years, Brazil (like many other
places in this unjust world) has been the conquered land of
Biopirates, stealers of life. The treasure is the indigenous peoples
and nature, the secrets hidden in that land teeming with life
or in the blood of the men and women. Today, multi-national
pharmaceutical and food companies make huge profits to the
detriment of entire populations, perhaps selling the DNA of a
native on the web for a few dozen dollars, or else appropriating
all property rights on a type of fruit or rice. Biopirating is thus
theft for the commercial use of intellectual resources – the
natives’ curative knowledge and techniques – and the biological
resources of regions rich in biodiversity. Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil,
Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Suriname and Guyana, whose Amazon
regions have already been damaged by other forms of
exploitation, are now being threatened by this new form of
aggression as well. The phenomenon of biopirating is carried out
in various ways: the traffickers, disguised as tourists, gather
mushrooms, animals, seeds and plants to send abroad; or else
buy tropical forest areas where they then conduct experiments to
classify the species; or else they use various excuses to access the
indigenous communities and learn everything about their
resources from them. Subsequently, they patent these products
abroad, where they are also processed and commercialized, without,
however, giving the real owners, the natives, access to the
beneficial derivatives. It is possible to privatize knowledge and
nature? It is legitimate to patent human life? Biopirates is a
documentary that reveals a disturbing reality that poses serious
philosophical questions.
