quello appena detto, di attacco all’arte come “fattore
quanto espressione e comunicazione, in quanto condivisione
e dialogo.
dall’arte dell’estetica dominante e in continua trasformazione;
dell’artista cosiddetto romantico.
mito (F for Fake: the black sun, L’attacco col fuoco)?
cultura” in genere.
la guerra (Impero – The Old Testament 3.0 – The Black
Mirror of Democracy – Aaron il Guerriero Digitale e anche
Funerale a Berlino).
We continue using Super-8 but we’re aware of its great potential
to push beyond limits, its capacity to backdate all filmed
“reality,” its costs, and its by now obvious “inconvenience.”
Where does your hostile and at times scornful attitude
towards art come from?
When a few years ago, and certainly not alone, we reaffirmed
the concept of the fight against the art system on all fronts, we
did it chiefly on the basis of two suppositions: the first, which
we just stated, was to attack art as the “aestheticizing,” cosmetic
and consolatory factor of the social and political system
and, to put it the old-fashioned way, as “an opiate of the masses;”
secondly, because art, like religion, inhibits man’s every
desire for freedom. Creativity is therefore a religious sentiment,
in all respects. They claim to teach our children, in our
schools, the culture of “beauty” and of believing in God: it’s a
question of production dynamics and social matters, and it’s a
question of the market. We’ve never disdained art as a form of
expression and communication when it concerns sharing and
dialogue. In the meantime, however, the scenario has evolved
significantly; it seems to us that attacking art today is truly
like, as they say, “shooting at the Red Cross.” Production
dynamics have imposed a radical change and Art, with a capital
A that ends up in galleries, was ousted by the art of the
dominant aesthetic in constant transformation. With artists
ousted by trend hunters, artistic works are aesthetic experiences
generously smeared with mechanisms of mass consent in
every aspect and moment of our lives: it is clearly the end of
art and the so-called romantic artist. Is it a defeat or a new
starting point? For us, who have always said that we’re not
artists, it’s no big loss, we knew it would come to this. This led
us to modify our work, abandoning the Plagiums several years
back to explore new possibilities.
What is your relationship with rites, fetishism, religion,
myth (F for Fake: The Black Sun, L’attacco col fuoco)?
It’s fodder for the imagination, like “lowbrow culture” in general.
An important topic such as religion was dealt with in the
audio and video works on war (Impero, The Old Testament
3.0, The Black Mirror of Democracy, Aaron il Guerriero
Digitale and even Funerale aBerlino).
Does it make sense for art, and aesthetic representations
in general, to still deal with politics and promote ideological
positions?
Precisely for the reason we were saying before, the answer is
yes, it continues to make sense to us. It’s a question of reaching
apparently impenetrable circuits, such as television, where
consent is manufactured using the tools of aesthetics and
information. It’s an attempt that should be made with appropriate
instruments whose dynamics we know.
It seems as if you deliberately choose to block any lyrical
impetus. How much do rationality and calculation
determine your work?
Each work essentially has a rational matrix: each time, there is
something that must be communicated to the outside, and this
is hardly ever “personal.” However, it’s true that we are pretty
fascinated with the balance and symmetry of a Renaissance
matrix. Sometimes, the lyrical impulse and the circuitousness
of form have been used to conceal reality behind a pretty face.
Nevertheless, you were right, it’s a question of “blocking”
lyrical impetuses.Who knows; however; whether these lyrical
