Per il cinema coreano Jang Sun-woo è stato un provocatore culturale. Le sue opere erano spesso sopra le righe e si scontravano
con la mentalità gretta e pedante. Sempre imprevedibile, ha messo in crisi critici e giornalisti, guadagnandosi
però il favore del pubblico. Dai suoi film emerge una immaginazione fervida, idee cinefile sovversive e innovative, con
una profondità intellettuale che spazia dall’estremismo politico al credo buddista. Posso affermare con certezza che senza
Jang Sun-woo la storia del cinema coreano, dopo il 1985, sarebbe stata molto diversa. Sono molto felice che la Mostra
di Pesaro abbia dimostrato un interesse sempre crescente nei confronti del cinema coreano, e che abbia deciso di dedicare
un programma speciale a Jang Sun-woo. Credo che i suoi film possano essere considerati come un linguaggio universale
per tutta la società contemporanea, al di là dei suoi confini. Spero quindi che il pubblico europeo possa apprezzarli
così come li ho apprezzati io. Molte grazie.

Jang Sun-woo has been a troublemaker for the Korean film industry. His works have often crossed the line and clashed with burea
crats, and his unpredictability has given journalists and critics a hard time. At the same time, however, his unpredictability and troublesome
activities have been a pleasure for audiences. His unlimited imagination, subversive yet breakthrough cinematic ideas, and
his profound intellectual world - from radical political issues to Buddhistic beliefs - are all exposed through his films. I am confident
to say that Korean film history from 1985 onward would have been very stark without Jang Sun-woo. I am more than happy that
Pesaro has shown persistent interest in Korean cinema and is dedicating a special program to Jang Sun-woo. I believe his films can
be universal languages with which to communicate among contemporary people across all boundaries. I do hope that his films will
give European audiences the same pleasure they have given me, and leave just as strong an impression. Thank you very much.
