PROGETTOVIDEO
Nuovi possibili racconti
dinamiche, generi e generatrici culturali. Manca persino
simile a quella dell’arte figurativa, senza però
Italia.
il dettaglio del corpo (What I’m Looking For). Contrariamente
irae). L’ipervisibilità raggiunta dai media viene prima sbriciolata
New possible stories
by Andrea Di Mario
The entire world of video production suffers from a curious form
of namelessness. On the one hand, there is a swarm of products
of all types and lengths, on the other, a critical reception that
often cannot quantify its numbers or describe its dynamics, genres
and cultural generators. Even an appropriate terminology is
lacking. The few “definitions” regard videomakers that have
obtained the highest number of spectators at festivals: a situation
potentially similar to that of the figurative arts, without, however,
the existence of a market! Therefore, the aim of Progettovideo
is not to create a simple kaleidoscope of these works, but
to attempt to allow a “format identity” to emerge through their
variety, presenting consolidated programs by auteurs, as well as
Italian premieres.
A continuity of formal themes that surfaces in a rather obvious
way from this year’s international Nuove Proposte Video is
the widespread use of a technique resembling stop-motion. Having
started out as film’s underprivileged cousins, these video stories
begin to resemble forms of an “intellectual do-it-yourself,”
especially there where an intimate narration exists. The technique
of juxtaposing x amount of digital frames, however, once
again has the capacity to diversely bring into focus random portions
of reality, naturally including details of the body (What
I’m Looking For). As opposed to the traditional visual story,
the rhythm is no longer dictated by the camera’s movement: with
video, one can look at a large city with the same frequency of
beats with which one looks at the different sections of a tomography.
These procedures are associated with a narrative voice like
true “objective correlatives.” French videomaker Jean-Gabriel
Périot (Dies irae) has made a strict principle of this procedure,
in its absolutely linear version. The hyper-visibility achieved by
the media is first broken down into thousands of homologous
fragments and then re-edited to create a mad dash, an “on the
road” ballet, where the unstoppable seething of the world runs
over to the darkest corner of a gas chamber in Auschwitz. The
aim of Progettovideo is thus to contain a series of coordinates
and to render more definite the great melting pot of the video
world and its uncertain life forms: a kind of new pre-cinema
enticed by an avant-garde without “isms,” whose animation laboratory
was replaced by a desktop.
The same holds true for the Documentando section, where is it
no coincidence that the use of the gerund signifies the contemporaneity
and the modification borne of the working hypothesis
of the interpretation of the real. The portrait of painter Leo Mingrone
is not yet a portrait but a vivid assertion of existence from
any random patch of green in Europe (Oggidunque); the deformation
of the chiaroscuro images of a mine becomes a pictorial
memory (Mémoire carbone); the absolutely flat description
when a landscape is destroyed (Réminiscences d’un voyage
en Palestine); the globe of duo Dan Boord/Valdovino, who propose
a bustling to and fro between the States and Mexico,
between models of development and tradition and Cold War
ghosts that become oxymorons of the image (Themes).
