MY KOREAN CINEMA
(t.l.: Il mio cinema coreano)
A series of documentaries on film and the film industry, from the
present and past, filtered through Kim Hong-joon’s personal
experiences. A work in progress whose aim is to be a mosaic of
the history and stories of Korean cinema.
in quegli anni. Ovviamente, Im Kwon-taek, Yu
Hyon-mok, Kim Ki-young, Shin Sang-okk e altri ancora
“I conducted some interviews on the train when I was going to
Jeonju for the festival…. I filmed, together with several students,
the various phases of restoration of An Empty Dream…. I
interviewed a famous cinematographer of the 1960s to whom we
are indebted for the use of several particular devices…. There are
four or five different themes and I still have to decide whether to
make a series of short episodes or fewer, longer episodes….”
Kim Hong-joon
“Unique and indispensable for gaining an insight into Korean
cinema. Starting with his own roots in the film business, festival
director, commissioner and filmmaker Kim Hong-joon offers a
fascinating portrait of Korea from the 1960s on. The 1960s, 70s
and 80s were a ‘dark period’ in South Korean politics and thus
few think back nostalgically on the culture of the period and even
fewer have taken the time and trouble to look afresh at the films
made in those years. Of course, it's known that Im Kwon-taek,
Yu Hyon-mok, Kim Ki-young, Shin Sang-okk and others did distinguished
work under the old studio system, but the great bulk
of Korean films made in the ‘dark’ decades remain forgotten and
undocumented.”
