Un intimo ritratto di Jang Sun-woo, il più iconoclasta dei
registi coreani, mentre sta preparando due nuovi film: il
live-action cyber-action thriller The Resurrection of the Little
Match Girl e l’animato Buddista/Sciamanico Princess Bari
(un progetto in realtà non ancora iniziato). Diviso in capitoli
il documentario esamina la carriera e i film di Jang da
molteplici angolazioni e include le voci non solo di coloro
che hanno lavorato con lui ma anche di molti coreani che
sono rimasti toccati/scioccati/eccitati/offesi dai suoi lavori.
Singoli capitoli sono dedicati ad argomenti come l’acconciatura
idiosincratica di Jang e le controversie attorno
al suo precedente lavoro Lies. Il documentario cerca di porre
Jang e il suo lavoro in un contesto sociale il più ampio
possibile, e non solo in quello del cinema coreano. In fondo
è una delle più sincere e rivelatrici interviste con lo stesso
Jang.
An intimate portrait of Jang Sun-woo, Korea's most iconoclastic
director, as he prepares two new films: the live-action cyberaction
thriller The Resurrection of the Little Match Girl and
the animated buddhist/shamanist feature Princess Bari. Divided
into chapters, the documentary examines Jang's career and
films from many different angles and includes the voices not
only of those who have worked with Jang but also of numerous
ordinary Koreans who have been touched/shocked/excited/
offended by his work. Individual chapters are devoted to such
topics as Jang's idiosyncratic hairstyle and the controversy surrounding
his previous feature, Lies. The documentary tries to
place Jang and his work in the widest possible social context, not
only in the context of Korean cinema. At its heart is a series of
remarkably candid and revealing interviews with Jang himself.

Tony Rayns è un filmaker, critico e organizzatore di festival.
E’ considerato tra i maggiori conoscitori del cinema
asiatico. Ha scritto e realizzato documentari su autori
come Kitano Takeshi, Chen Kaige, Miike Takashi, Zhang
Yimou, facendoli conoscere al pubblico occidentale. Nel
1997 ha organizzato la prima retrospettiva dedicata a Jang
Sun-woo al festival di Rotterdam.
Biography
Tony Rayns is a filmmaker, critic and festival organizer. He is
considered to be one of the greatest experts of Asian cinema. He
has written and made documentaries on directors such as Kitano
Takeshi, Chen Kaige, Miike Takashi and Zhang Yimou, introducing
them to western audiences. In 1997, he organized the
first retrospective dedicated to Jang Sun-woo at the Rotterdam
Film Festival.
