Ju sogna di diventare un professionista dei videogiochi.
Per questo, frequenta assiduamente una sala gestita da
Hae-mi, ragazza della quale è innamorato. Una sera viene
invitato a prendere parte a uno strano videogioco chiamato
Resurrection of the Little Match Girl. L’obbiettivo è quello
di aiutare la piccola fiammiferaia, che ha le stesse sembianze
di Hae-mi, a morire di freddo evitando che sia
avvicinata da clienti o malintenzionati. Inoltre, mentre sta
morendo, la fiammiferaia non deve sognare la propria
nonna, come avviene nella fiaba di Andersen, bensì il giocatore.
In caso di vittoria è previsto un cospicuo premio in
denaro e la possibilità di vivere con la fiammiferaia in un
mondo felice. Se il giocatore si rivela avventato, potrebbe
non tornare più nel mondo reale. Ju accetta la sfida ma presto
dovrà fare i conti con avversari spietati e con il misterioso
“Sistema”, che regola il funzionamento del gioco e,
apparentemente, della realtà.
Ju dreams of becoming a video game professional, which is why
he regularly patronizes a video game parlor run by Hae-mi, the
girl with whom he is in love. One evening, he is invited to play
a strange video game called The Resurrection of the Little
Match Girl. The aim is to help the little match girl (who looks
like Hae-mi) die of cold, avoiding any encounters with clients or
the ill-intentioned. Furthermore, as she is dying, the little match
girl must not dream about her grandmother, as takes place in the
Andersen’s fairy tale, but the player. If the player wins, he will
receive a substantial monetary prize and the possibility to live
with the little match girl in a happy world. However, if the player
proves to be imprudent, he might not come back to the real
world. Ju accepts the challenge but must soon face ruthless
adversaries and the mysterious “System,” which regulates the
game and, apparently, reality.

“I brought many standards and formulas from commercial cinema
into Resurrection of the Little Match Girl, while still making
it a personal film. What I wanted to show with all these elements
was chaos, confusion; there are a lot of genres all mixed up
in the film, because I didn’t want it to be clearly boxed into a limited
definition of genre. All the chaotic images in the film are
supposed to ask the viewer questions about the nature of the
images themselves: are they real or not? Are they just illusion,
or are they reality?”
