Passage to Buddha

Abbandonato in una coperta dalla madre, Sonje viene cresciuto
dal ladro Munsu. Il padre adottivo muore e Sonje,
all’età di undici anni, rimane solo. Presa la coperta con cui
la madre l’aveva abbandonato, intraprende un viaggio di
diversi anni lungo il Paese, deciso a ritrovare la donna. Tra
i vari incontri, si imbatte in Pobwoon, un monaco buddista
che gli spiega come potrebbe raggiungere l’Illuminazione.
Altri personaggi interrompono il cammino di Sonje.
Tra questi, Iryon, una ragazza che aveva conosciuto anni
prima e Pobwoon, il monaco che ordina a Sonje di portare
con se la ragazza. Rimasta in cinta, Iryon perde il bambino
e decide di scappare. Nuovamente solo, Sonje incontra
ancora una volta Pobwoon. Finalmente trova in sogno la
madre. Ha raggiunto l’Illuminazione, la madre che non ha
mai trovato in realtà è nascosta in ogni cosa.
Abandoned in a blanket belonging to his mother, Sonje is raised
by the thief Munsu. His adopted father dies, leaving Sonje alone
at the age of eleven. Taking the blanket, he begins a many-year
journey throughout the country, intent on finding his mother.
Among his many encounters, he meets Pobwoon, a Buddhist
monk who teaches him how to reach Enlightenment. Other characters
interrupt Sonje’s travels. Among them, Iryon, a girl he
met years earlier, and Pobwoon, the monk who orders Sonje to
take the girl with him. After becoming pregnant, Iryon loses the
child and decides to run away. Alone once again, Sonje meets up
with Pobwoon once more. He finally meets his mother in a
dream. He has reached Enlightenment: the mother he never
found in real life is hidden in all things.
“Oviamente Hwaomgyong solleva molte questioni politiche
e sociali, tuttavia per me questo film riguarda il problema
della realizzazione e della libertà degli individui. Ho voluto
adattare il romanzo perché mi sentivo insoddisfatto circa
i modi con i quali si valuta la direzione verso la quale si
muove la nostra società. Sentivo che il prisma del Sutra
avrebbe fornito una nuova prospettiva.”

“Obviously Hwaomgyong raises many social and political
questions, but for me it centres on questions of fulfilment and the
freedom of the individual. I wanted to adapt the novel because I
felt dissatisfied with existing ways of evaluating the direction
our society is moving in. I sensed that the prism of the Sutra
would provide a new perspective.”
