Anna ha comprato un pacchetto dal tour operator Butterfly.
Viene promessa, durante il soggiorno in una località
dell’Asia non meglio precisata, la perdita della memoria
attraverso il “virus dell’oblio”. Numerosi turisti sono attirati
da questa offerta. Di contro, gli abitanti del luogo si
disinteressano al “virus” a causa dell’inquinamento che
minaccia la sopravvivenza sia della popolazione che della
città stessa. In questa situazione cupa e claustrofobica,
Anna incontra Yuki, una guida dell’agenzia Butterfly e K,
un giovane tassista orfano.
Anna bought a tour package from the Butterfly Agency. She is
promised that during her stay in an unspecified locality in Asia,
she will lose her memory through the “oblivion virus.” Numerous
tourists are attracted to this offer. Meanwhile, the inhabitants
of the place have lost interest in the “virus” on account of
the pollution that threatens the survival of the people as well as
the city. In this dismal and claustrophobic situation, Anna meets
Yuki, a Butterfly Agency tour guide, and K, a young orphan taxi
driver.

(...) Come le religioni, il virus dell’oblio permette agli
esseri umani di sfuggire momentaneamente ai ricordi
dolorosi. Ma la memoria è proprio ciò che ci lega a noi stessi
e agli altri. Per me, nella sua incessante corsa alla modernizzazione,
l’Asia non fa altro che dimenticare il proprio
passato. Come gli umani attaccati dal virus, noi viviamo
sospesi in una sorta di nichilismo, soffrendo per un dolore
rimosso.”

Like other religions, the oblivion virus allows human beings to
momentarily escape from their painful memories. But memory is
precisely that which binds us to ourselves and to others. I believe
that in its incessant haste towards modernization, Asia has done
nothing other than forget its past. Like the men infected by the
virus, we live suspended in a kind of nihilism, suffering a pain
that we have erased from our memories.”

Biografia
Nato a Seoul nel 1968, si è laureato nel 1989 in scienze delle
comunicazioni. Ha frequentato l’Accademia Nazionale
del Cinema di Lodz, in Polonia. Ha avuto tra i suoi maestri,
Krzysztof Kieslowski. Ha esordito alla regia con un
cortometraggio nel 1994. Nel 1997 realizza il suo primo
lungometraggio, Taekwondo.
Biography
Born in Seoul in 1968, he graduated in 1989 in Communications.
He later attended the National Film Academy in Lodz,
Poland, where Krzysztof Kieslowski was one of his teachers. He
debuted as a director with a short film in 1994. In 1997, he made
his first feature film, Taekwondo.
