Song Il-Gon “...a digital video camera also allowed me to try many different things with fewer crew members and a smaller budget, and, at the same time, I was able to depict stronger images and capture a closer look at people and events.”
Per me, però, la cosa più importante era che il film sembrasse “una pellicola” perché la gente considera film Why Digital? by Park Ki-yong It was 1998, at a small art house in Seoul: I was one of a small audience who had just seen a film shot with a DV camera and transferred to film. Others left, but I was stuck to my seat, chewing over the film again and again. It was rough, radical and fresh. It was a completely new type of film, and a new experience for me. The film was Celebration (Festen) by Thomas Vinterberg. The first Dogma film, and my first digital film. At that time, I was thinking quite hard of how to find a way to make a low budget film, which would hopefully give me total freedom and allow me to make what I wanted to make. My first feature film, Motel Cactus, made in 1997, was also planned as a low budget film but due to financing problems it ended up becoming a mainstream film with big stars, and I was not happy with the result. The film got certain recognition at film festivals, but was a flop at the box office and was disregarded by local critics. There was very little chance for me to make another commercial film. It was a difficult time. I had to find a way to make films on my own, away from the mainstream. They had to be low budget but, as I had already experienced, getting financing for even a low budget film was very difficult. To make a 35mm feature film, you had to have at least a few hundred thousand US dollars but producers thought that it was even riskier than making a big budget film. They thought there could be no audience if you did not use any stars and make the film look rich. While this was true, it did not mean that a film could only be made in the mainstream system. So, I had to find a way, but it had to be very low budget. 16mm was another option, but the production process was the same and the budget was not much different from 35mm because one still has to rent all the equipment (cameras, lights, editing facilities, etc.). I had to find an entirely new way of making a film with as low a budget as possible. Whether or not Celebration was the first feature film shot with a DV camera was of no importance to me. Or whether the film The Vow of Chastity had followed the rules of the Dogme 95 manifesto was also of little interest to me. For me, the important thing was that the film had shown the possibility of making digital films, and that low budget filmmaking was possible with a DV-cam. The film had a certain video look that I was not very fond of, but it was different from films shot with analogue video cameras. From the late 1980s, people have discussed making films on video but eventually only porn films for video release, short films and documentaries used the medium. Most film people thought it a cheap tool. It was never seriously considered as an alternative to filmmaking, but digital was different. It was also video, but with a different dimension and, best of all, it offered a new possibility. I was very much encouraged and started dreaming of making a digital film. After I had decided to make Camel(s) on digital or, to be more precise, after I had decided to make a digital film and started looking for a suitable story, the most important thing for me was how to make the film have a “film look.” This was because people still considered only films with a “film look” to be real films. I conducted a number of expensive film transfer tests in order to find the right method, but very soon I realized that there was no point in trying to make the film look like it was shot on film when it obviously was not. And, furthermore, I though there should be something more to the experience than merely switching cameras, from a 35mm or 16mm to a DV camera The camera’s 58 41 a Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema
