Per trovare il metodo giusto, ho effettuato una serie di test abbastanza costosi, ma presto ho realizzato che non era possibile cercare di fare sembrare una pellicola una cosa che ovviamente non lo era. E comunque sentivo che c’era qualcosa di più del semplice passaggio da 35mm o 16mm alla dv. Il peso e le dimensioni ridotte della videocamera, i lunghi tempi di registrazione sulla cassetta e il sistema di montaggio non lineare richiedevano una nuova attitudine e un nuovo approccio. Il metodo di regia convenzionale sembrava quindi inadeguato e dovevo cercarne uno nuovo. Mi trovavo di fronte alla domanda: “Cos’è il digitale?” Durante i mesi in cui ho girato Camel(s), ho capito a poco a poco che fare un film in digitale era molto diverso che fare un film in pellicola. La distanza tra la videocamera e gli attori è differente, così come il rapporto tra il regista e gli attori. Non è soltanto un modo per fare film low budget. Per molti registi che hanno fatto film in digitale, la parola chiave è liberazione: da apparecchiature pesanti, da ore perse a regolare le luci, dai vecchi metodi e sistemi e, soprattutto, liberazione dal linguaggio convenzionale del cinema. È ovvio che questa liberazione è diventata possibile soprattutto grazie all’emancipazione dal capitale, ma è quasi paradossale che meno capitale dia una maggiore libertà. Questo nuovo modo di considerare i film, ha creato comunque una nuova estetica del cinema e la gente ha cominciato a considerare il digitale non solo come un nuovo strumento cinematografico, ma anche come un mezzo per mettere in discussione la vera identità del film: “Che cosa è film e che cosa è regia?” Personalmente credo, e sono sicuro che molti siano d’accordo con me, che l’avvento del digitale sia uno degli eventi più importanti nella storia del cinema. Il digitale ha stravolto tutto. Fare film non è più qualcosa per pochi eletti che operano all’interno del mainstream: tutti potranno farlo perché, grazie al digitale, il budget e le questioni tecniche non saranno più un problema. I software di elaborazione al computer vengono aggiornati ogni anno e le videocamere HD compatte sono già sul mercato. E comunque la tecnologia viene perfezionata continuamente. Inoltre, la distribuzione e la proiezione digitale entreranno in uso relativamente presto, ragion per cui sarà possibile fare un lungometraggio senza budget e proiettarlo nei teatri commerciali. Sono sicuro che questo avverrà a breve. Perciò l’unica cosa importante sarà come utilizzare al meglio questo mezzo liberatorio – il video digitale. Non è fondamentale sapere se o quando il digitale riuscirà a abbattere e sostituire la pellicola. Non è questione di superiorità ma di scelta, proprio come si decide se fare un film all’interno o all’esterno del mainstream, si può scegliere tra pellicola e digitale. Adesso la domanda è: “Perché il digitale?” lighter weight and small size, the long recording time of the tape, and the non-linear editing system were asking for a new attitude and approach. I was faced with the question: “What is digital?” During the several months it took to make Camel(s), I gradually learned that making a film on digital is different from making a film on film. The distance between the camera and the actor is different; the relationship between the director and the actor is different; and so forth. It was not merely just a way of making a film cheaply. Many who have made digital films have said that the key word for digital filmmaking is liberation: liberation from heavy equipment, from the long hours of setting the lights, from the old system and method, and, above all, liberation from the conventional language of film. Of course, this liberation was possible or became possible due to the liberation of capital. It is paradoxical that less capital gives greater freedom. Anyhow, a whole new way of looking at film has called for new film aesthetics, and people have started to consider digital not only as a new tool for filmmaking but also as a new tool for questioning the very identity of film: “What is film or filmmaking?” I personally think, and I am sure many will agree with me, that the advent of digital is one of the most important events in film history. Digital has changed everything. Filmmaking is no longer for the selected few within the mainstream system: anybody can make a film. With digital filmmaking, the budget and technical matters will no longer be an issue. PC editing software is being upgraded every year and mini-HD cameras are already on the market. The technological advances will not cease. Furthermore, digital distribution and screening will be in general use quite soon. By then, one will be able to make a feature film without any budget and show it in commercial theaters. I am pretty sure that this will happen soon. Therefore, the important thing will be how to use this liberating medium – digital video. It is not important whether or when digital can kill and replace film. It is not a matter of superiority but a matter of choice. Just as you choose to make a film within or outside the mainstream system, you can make a choice between film and digital. KOREAN DIGITAL Kim Dong-won SONGHWAN Repatriation (t.l.: Rimpatrio) Tema del documentario è la dolorosa divisione tra le due Coree. Il punto di vista è quello delle spie inviate dal Nord e arrestate nel Sud tra gli anni ‘60 e ‘80. In particolare, Kim Dong-won ha intervistato le spie liberate a partire dal 1992, ossia quelle che resistettero al “programma di ri-educazione” e che dunque furono scarcerate più tardi rispetto a chi sotto tortura decise di sconfessare l’ideologia comunista. Non avendo un luogo dove poter vivere, solo nel settembre del 2000, questi prigionieri poterono rimpatriare nella Corea del Nord. Kim Dong-won incontrò due di queste spie e decise di raccontarne le vicende, affascinato dal fatto che nonostante la prigionia e le torture non avessero rinunciato alla propria ideologia. The documentary’s theme is the painful division between the two Koreas. The point of view is that of the spies sent from the North and arrested in the South from the 1960s to the 1980s. In particular, Kim Dong-won interviewed spies freed after 1992 or, rather, those who resisted against the “reeducation program” and were thus freed later than those who, under torture, decided to repudiate Communist ideology. Not having a place to live, these prisoners were not repatriated to North Korea until September of 2000.
